A popular children's novel begins with a white rabbit muttering these words and frantically scurrying to meet an appointment.

This scene from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is all too familiar for adults in today's fast-paced modern world.

Businessmen speed down the road during rush hour, intermittently looking down at their wristwatches and playing dangerous dodging games with their cars, all the while muttering the white rabbit's key phrase, I'm late!

Diligent people are busier than ever in today's industriously demanding society. Their hectic lifestyles require a reliable way to effectively manage time. This means watches need to be more dependable than ever.

Enter watch batteries.

Watch batteries were created in 1957 by the Hamilton Watch Company, replacing watch-winding technology.

Most watches today retain their original analogue display. This means they have a circular head with numbers systematically separated around the face. There are two hands, the hour and the minute hand, which rotate to display the time. Digital watches, however, were designed in the 1970s to display the time as a number.

Watch batteries are designed for both models to condense a high amount of energy into an incredibly tiny device. Most models produce about 1.5 volts of energy and require a mild level of discharge, ensuring a long battery life.

Watch batteries come in a myriad of sizes to fit each specific brand. Batteries typically last up to three years. If, in that time, the instruction manual is misplaced or thrown out, the prominent battery company Duracell has an online battery finder depending on every watch's make and model.

When replacing a watch battery, be sure to correctly align the positive and negative sides of the battery with the device's promptings. If the inside of the watch is dirty, clean it out with a polishing cloth before inserting the new battery. This will ensure the watch will run like new. The only thing left is to set the watch and continue on punctually with the day's appointments and engagements.

If it is a waterproof battery, however, more care needs to be taken. Watch sellers and jewelry store employees are trained to use specialized tools to ensure the watch remains waterproof after the battery replacement.

After the battery has been changed, only thing left is to set the watch; running late will no longer be a factor.
